I've been reading this morning a September 2022 blog post by John Pavlovitz (left) entitled, "Trump Didn’t Break America, He Revealed Our Brokenness." Mr. Pavlovitz is a progressive Christian author and blogger who writes under the line, "Stuff That Needs To Be Said."
I'm not sure why the social media gods pushed this piece back to the surface today, but it seems appropriate following the most recent indictment of Mr. Trump --- during Pride Month.
No matter where you stand on either side of today's great political fault line, there seems to be a longing for the past. For progressives --- before Trump. For regressives, before all those pesky black, gay, indigenous and female trouble-makers showed up and banned enforced prayer from public schools. Or something like that
The truth according to Pavlovitz, however, is that Trump, an amoral grifter, merely revealed the brokenness of these disunited states; he didn't break us. So neutralizing Trump won't settle the issue.
And as those of us who who fall into those categories of peskiness, and others, can tell you --- the 21st century is infinitely preferable to the mid 20th, or before, so far as our safety and welfare are concerned. So time-travel back to the 1950s isn't going to work either.
It's just that "Every facade has been torn down, every phony trapping of religiosity or patriotism stripped away. Now, there is only the sickening, unvarnished truth of who we are as a nation, and staring at it in the raking daylight is the only chance we have to confront and repair it," Pavlovitz writes.
And the question remains several months after Pavlovitz suggested it: How in the world do we go about making repairs?
