Gay Iowa History: Laura Duffy

Gay and lesbian voices from Iowa, or related to our state, almost always (until recently) been edited out or obscured. This is an attempt during National LGBT History Month to identify some of those men and women with Iowa links who have spoken through literature, media, the arts and other ways --- and made a difference.

DUFFY, LAURA, U.S. attorney for the Southern District of California. Confirmed unanimously by the Senate Judiciary Committee during May of 2010, Laura Duffy became one of four openly LGBT U.S. attorneys in the Justice Department.

Born during 1962 in Des Moines, Duffy earned her Bachelor of Science degree at Iowa State University and went on to earn her Juris Doctor from the Creighton University School of Law, Omaha. After joining the U.S. Department of Justice as a trial attorney in 1993, she gained widespread respect while battling criminal drug cartels along the U.S.-Mexican border. Since her appointment as U.S. attorney, Duffy has ruffled a few feathers in California with her hard-line stance on medical marijuana.

Duffy is married to Keri Davis and they have one child.
