Some days, when tempted to preach, I mix up a batch of Mama's apple crisp. It is generally more productive, usually more palatable and certainly better for me. Due to a little known nutritional phenomenon, the oatameal in the crust diminishes by half the number of calories in the rest of the dish. Add vanilla ice cream and they're all gone.
I have no idea where this recipe came from or how long its been around --- just for as long as I can remember. Serve it warm and its guaranteed to be runny --- but that way the ice cream melts right in.
APPLE CRISP
Step 1: Mix together and then place in a casserole or baking dish:
5 cups diced apples
1 cup white sugar
1 tablespoon flour
1 teaspoon cinnamon
half cup broken nutmeats
Step 2: Add a half cup of water
Step 3: Mix together:
3/4 cup oatmeal
3/4 cup flour
3/4 cup brown sugar
1/3 cup melted butter
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 cup chopped nutmeats
Spread the "Step 3" mix evenly over the top of the apple mix and bake 40 minutes or so in a 350-degree oven. Serve warm or cold.
