Penstemon digitalis (Snapdragon family - Scrophulariaceae). Most common species of the genus in Iowa. Smooth, shiny plants up to 4 feet tall. Leaves opposite, widest near their heart-shaped bases. Grows in prairies, rich woodlands and roadsides. Found throughout the tallgrass reagon. Also cultivated. Native to North America. Blooms late spring to midsummer.
From "pente" (five), "stemon" (stamen) and "digitalis" (finger shape of flower). Also known as talus slope penstemon, white foxglove, false foxglove, beardtongue, etc.
