Blue Flag

Iris virginica shrevei. This member of the iris family is native to marshes and wet prairies where water levels are relatively stable in Lucas County and throughout the tallgrass region. Leaves are typically iris, sword-shaped and pointed, with stems up to three feet tall, one or two branches. Generally grows in colonies.

Flowers, blue-violet with yellow and white markings, appear on short stalks along the tops of stems for perhaps a month during late spring and early summer. Roots are poisonous to humans.
