POW/MIA Remembrance at Veterans Memorial Park

The event early Friday afternoon --- National POW/MIA Recognition Day --- was a visit by approximately 100 Chariton 4th-graders to Lucas County's Veterans Memorial Park arranged by Earl Comstock and other Legionnaires and friends of the park.

I agreed to help out a little by talking about the chapters of Lucas County military history commemorated on the Freedom Rock, completed by Greenfield's Ray Sorensen during 2020.

The students and their teachers walked to the park from Van Allen School, arriving at 1 p.m. and then dividing into four units to move through four stations in the park.

They were bright, attentive, well-disciplined --- a pleasure to talk to.

The Freedom Rock "chapter" most appropriate for the day commemorates Sgt. George Musick, 33 when he was killed in action on 3 September 1950 at Yongsan, Korea. His remains never have been recovered. In fact, the remains of three of nine Lucas Countyans who died in the Korean War still are missing. The others are Elmer E. Rowe and Roy R. Kirton.

The park, located a block southwest of the square, is always open during daylight hours and is arranged so that it tells many stories. If you've not been there, plan a visit and expect to stay a while.
