Chariton Cemetery Heritage Tour only a week away

We're less than a week away now from the 18th annual Chariton Cemetery Heritage Tour, "Tales from South Hill," scheduled for 4 p.m. next Sunday in the southeast hilltop section of the cemetery.

Here's hoping we have weather to match that of  the perfect late summer (or early autumn) day we enjoyed yesterday when the brave volunteers who will portray our five subjects gathered in late afternoon on the front porch of the shelter to rehearse.

They are (from left) Mike Loew (portraying Samuel White Walthall, a War of 1812 veteran), Dave Threlkeld (portraying his great-great-grandfather, Isaac Newton Threlkeld), Trish McKinley (portraying Isabelle Greer Redlingshafer, my great-great grandmother), Deb Black (portraying Mabel Ann Black who also will tell the stories of her two brothers) and Willy Black (portraying Lewis Bonnett, one of Lucas County's most prominent late 19th century livestock producers).

The tour is open to the public without charge. Seating will be provided in the presentation area, but you're welcome to bring your own.

The annual tour is a project of the Chariton Historic Preservation Commission. The park-like cemetery itself, established in 1864 to replace two earlier graveyards, is listed as the Chariton Cemetery Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places.
