Many thanks to everyone who attended --- and organized, worked at and performed during --- the ice cream social Thursday evening at the Lucas County Historical Society Museum.
It had been a hot day, so we were a little concerned about attendance. But the patio is shaded in the evening by a big oak tree and positioned to catch the breezes, so it's always been a very pleasant place to hold an event like this --- and the crowd that gathered Thursday for ice cream and to hear Tyler and Alesha Urich (above) perform did not disappoint.
The range in age in the audience from very young to very experienced was gratifying.
I really enjoyed Tyler's and Alesha's program of light classical pieces interspersed with the occasional show tune and old favorites. We've offered a broad variety of live performances during these August socials over the years and I like that.
Besides, it made me happy to hear a piece with lyrics by acclaimed poet and Harlem Renaissance pioneer Langston Hughes as part of the program.
Board member Molly Spoon (center below) was largely responsible for organizing this year's social and her decision to serve Double Dip ice cream was a very good one --- it was wonderful! Her assistants here in serving were Cindy Bahr and Randy Spoon.
We'll close out the events season at the museum on Saturday morning, Oct. 1, with a morning open house and harvest celebration designed to complement Chariton's homecoming weekend.
The museum is open 1-4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday through the end of October and the Stephens House and Lewis Building will remain open Tuesday-Thursday after that. Admission is free and all are welcome.
