A word from William Sloane Coffin ....

I try not to engage in magical thinking of any sort, thank you very much, but feel obligated to tell you that this quote from the Rev. William Sloane Coffin (1924-2006) popped up spontaneously in one of my social media feeds this morning while I was in the kitchen getting another cup of coffee.

So I've decided to run with it, recognizing good advice for these troublesome times when I see it.

The Rev. Mr. Coffin was a United Church of Christ clergyman universally known as an advocate for peace and justice and his commitment to civil rights --- for everyone regardless of race, gender or orientation.

While reading more than I already knew about him, I discovered that he died and is buried in the town of Strafford, Vermont. That's the town where William Miller II --- that great-great-great grandfather of mine who died during 1866 in Monroe County, Iowa (near Pleasant Corners southwest of Eddyville) --- was born during 1790. Coincidence? Of course it is.

Here's his tombstone. The Latin line translates, "I love therefore I am."
