This somewhat battered image caught my attention yesterday when I was looking for something else at the Lucas County Historical Society Museum. Obviously, it's had a hard life. But the faces of the subjects remain sharp and clear.
Working from newspaper reports involving the movers and shakers in Lucas County governance, I've narrowed the date to the mid-1890s, perhaps 1895.
The ladies and gentlemen include (seated from left) Isaac Bowen, deputy county clerk; Henry Blous, county clerk; Thomas Gay, supervisor; Mace Wheeler, supervisor; Peter Van Arsdale, supervisor; Will Culbertson, county treasurer; and Dr. Charles Goltry, county superintendent of schools.
Standing are (from left) Frank Coffman, county recorder; Mrs. Coffman, deputy county recorder; Eli Manning, sheriff; E. H. Knowles, county attorney; Eugene Timmons, courthouse custodian; Ora Sheller Eustis, deputy county auditor; and Philander Sheller, county auditor.
