Cemetery tour reminder: It's today!

Just a friendly reminder that the 19th annual Chariton Cemetery Heritage Tour, sponsored by the Chariton Historic Preservation Commission, begins at 4 p.m. today on a hilltop in the northwest quadrant of the cemetery.

Three of the graves are in the oldest part of the cemetery, established in 1864, and the other two just across the driveway south in a slightly later addition. The remains of one of our subjects, Polly Sutphin Scott Howard, were moved here --- probably in 1865 --- from her original burial place a block west of the square.

John Lee Brown, embattled state auditor, and Oran Alonzo Hougland, an architect, are buried to the south. Buried near Polly are Susanna Millan Custer and Anna Margaret Redlingshafer Rosa.

Admission is free, seating will be provided and light refreshments will be served after. The forecast looks good, but in case of rain the event would move to the cemetery Shelter House.
