Sit-down dinner on the square marks centennials

Chariton will mark at least three centennials as well as completion of a two-year sidewalk project with a very special sit-town dinner on the square at noon on Sunday, Sept. 17.

Everyone is welcome, but ticket numbers are limited. So reservations, made as soon as possible, are in order. The cost is $25 per adult person for the pork loin meal (kids menu available for $8). Tables for eight at $200 include wine. Reservations may be made at the Lucas County Preservation Alliance web site.

Two Chariton landmarks are celebrating their 100th birthdays this fall. Chariton High School, designed by Des Moines architect William Gordon, opened its doors to students for the first time during September of 1923. The Hotel Chariton, designed by Chariton's own William Lee Perkins, opened to guests during November.

In addition, Chariton's Rotary Club is marking its centennial year --- and Yocom Park, known as East Park when it was developed, is 100 years old this year, too.

The two-year sidewalk project, nearing completion now, has involved replacing all of the sidewalks around the square, landscaping, new streetlights, development of pocket parks in former alleys and correction of drainage issues.
