So I watched the Season 9 and series finale of "Endeavour" --- entitled "Exeunt" --- last week and it did not disappoint. One review labeled it "a generous farewell" and that fairly well summarizes.
Latin for "they leave," "exeunt" directs characters to exit a stage, as Shaun Evans as Endeavour and Roger Allam as DI Fred Thursday now have --- along with the supporting cast.
"Lovingly put to bed" was another characterization.
That final choral performance in the great hall of Blenheim Palace and the encounter between Endeavour's black Jaguar and the maroon Morse-mobile on the Duke of Marlborough's driveway were lovely, if fanciful, touches.
And now we have 99 episodes of three series to binge watch. I've already started with Season 1 of "Morse."
John Thaw (1942-2002) as DCI Morse and Kevin Whately as Sgt. Lewis pioneered in 33 episodes of "Morse" between 1987 and 2000.
Whately carried on as "Inspector Lewis" with Laurence Fox as sidekick DS James Hathaway during 9 spin-off seasons from 2006 until 2015.
And "Endeavour," the "prequel" to "Morse," premiered in 2012 and concluded in 2022. Endeavour, for the uninitiated, is the given name Morse declined to reveal most of the time during the original series.
I watched "Endeavour" as part of a PBS Masterpiece subscription tacked onto Amazon Prime Video. "Morse" and "Inspector Lewis" are available there, too.
