Two more artifacts come home to the museum

These two items from the Lucas County Historical Society's military collection also returned home last week after a winter tune-up --- dealing archivally with issues that had developed over the years.

The first is one of the society's rarest artifacts, a map hand drawn during October of 1862 by T. Park Coin of Camp Lauman, located on high ground immediately west of Burlington and the muster site for the 10 companies of the 34th Iowa Volunteer Infantry. It is the only known image of the camp; even Camp Lauman's precise location has been lost.

Mounted more than 50 years ago by the original owner in a "dime-store" frame, it needed serious conservation work and now has been treated to a new frame and archival glass. If you'd like to read more about the image, follow this link: "The Story Behind an 1862 Civil War Map."

The oval image is a World War I portrait of Pvt. Bert Joy (1895-1980) that had bounced around in family storage for a good many years before arrival at the museum. The photograph has slight damage and the frame had come apart, barely hanging together. We had everything cleaned and the photograph securely mounted and sealed, but other than that just left everything alone.
