I've been diverting myself during midterm election madness by retreating via YouTube to the foothills of the Black Hills and the Sleep family's ranch, located near Spearfish, South Dakota. If that sounds interesting, you'll find the Sleep Ranch vlog here.
Carson Sleep, who produces the vlog, is the sixth generation of his family on the ranch and works there in partnership with his wife, Damaris; his parents, Jeff and Jodi; and a ranch hand, Jaques. Grandparents also are included in the operation.
This is a cow/calf outfit where cattle are summered on the Black Hills National Forest and wintered on deeded land in the foothills. There's also a backgrounding feedlot, and much of the year is devoted, too, to producing alfalfa and grass hay.
Beyond the fact politics really haven't been included in this slice of rural life elsewhere in the countryside is the fact these virtual visits remind me, while complaining about the snow and cold, that at least I'm not aboard a horse somewhere out in it chasing cattle.
