Happiness is a dose of Mary Peltola

My quest for the meaning of life via social media came up short this morning, but I did come across some news stories about Alaska's Mary Peltola that I wanted to read. Peltola, the other day, won a special election in that state to fill (just until November) its vacant seat in the U.S. House of Representatives.

That's good news because (a) Peltola is a Democrat and (b) she's Alaska Native, the first to be elected to national office. She also defeated the annoying Sarah Palin and that's positive, too.

Her term in office will be brief --- she must run again in November's general election for a full term; and once again, she's expected to face Palin.

But her election certainly was a bright spot in the week. Here's a link to The New York Times piece about her victory. If you read the story, you'll also discover that she "ran a relentlessly upbeat campaign that implicitly contrasted her reputation for kindness with the bombast and penchant for drama associated with Ms. Palin," according to The Times.

"Upbeat" is rare in politics these days.
