People of my age who venture forth in T-shirts tend to look like sacks of russets wrapped in dishtowels, but Des Moines-based entrepreneur Raygun is tempting me this week with a new line, inspired by Adel's Jake Chapman --- Republican president of the Iowa Senate.
The GOP-controlled Iowa Legislature convened this week, opening with about what you'd expect: A full-frontal assault on public education and journalists.
Chapman led the charge on Monday, attacking the media and teachers, claiming a "sinister agenda" to normalize children's "deviant" behavior. By "deviant," Chapman means any positive or helpful response to LGBTQ people or to in-school issues related to LGBTQ students. The fact that the Legislature, at the moment at least, does not control the content of library bookshelves seems to be a primary concern.
Gov. Kim Reynolds followed up on Tuesday in her "state of the state" address, expressing her alarm about liberal literature in the schools and proposing, again, a scholarship program that would funnel state funds into the operating budgets of private "Christian" schools.
Raygun, widely known in Iowa and elsewhere for its pithy T-shirt based commentary, was quick to respond. This T-shirt might be worn by an educator; others in the line are designed for those of us who "support sinister teachers."
If interested, here's a link to Raygun's web site. The firm has retail outlets in Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, Cedar Falls, Iowa City, Omaha, Kansas City and Chicago.
