Of course Mary knew, you idiot ...

This paraphrase of the Buddy Greene/Mark Lowry Christmas confection entitled "Mary, Did You Know?" struck me as funny this morning. Yes, that "holiday classic" has a lovely melody performed with great feeling by countless musicians, but the lyrics are complete nonsense.

An abomination that ranks right up there with the Christianized version of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah."

The combination dates from 1984 when it was introduced by Greene, composer of the melody; and Lowry, who wrote the words. Both were touring at the time with an outfit called the Gaither Vocal Band.

I'm actually a fan of those early Gaither Vocal Band "homecoming" specials that resurrected in their senior years several grand old Gospel performers and allowed us to enjoy them and their music before they passed on. My heart still belongs to Vestal Goodman.

But really, even someone like me --- by no means an orthodox believer and with no particular affection for the Bible --- is familiar with the Annunciation, as recorded in Luke 1. So yes ....

Mary freaking knew, that her baby boy

Would one day rule the nations.

Mary freaking knew, that her baby boy

Was lord of all creation.

Yes she knew!

Read Luke 1, you fool!

She sang about it then.

It helps, if when you're reading,

you listen to WOMEN.
