Who can identify any or all of these Shores?

This fine portrait of Matthew and Sarah Ann (McNeal) Shore and their nine children probably was taken in Chariton between 1885 and Matthew's death at 62 on Dec. 2, 1889, but there's a problem. The children are not identified on this image from the Lucas County Historical Society collection --- so I can't tell  you which is which.

I'm thinking there must be someone out there among the multitudinous Shore descendants, including some cousins of mine, who knows.

Matthew and Sarah Ann were Pennsylvania natives --- he was born Aug. 17, 1827, and she was born Sept. 30, 1828, both in Huntington County. They married ca. 1849 in Pennsylvania and started their family there, moved west to Illinois during the mid-1850s, then on to Pleasant Township, Lucas County, during the Civil War.

Sarah Ann outlived Matthew by more than five years, dying May 9, 1895, also in Pleasant Township. They are buried along with many other members of the extended Shore family in Zion Cemetery, Pleasant Township.

Here are their children's names: Sylvester (1849-1929), Mary (married Creighton Umphrey), Archibald (1853-1934), Ella (1855-1938; married Louis Duckworth), Emery James (1856-1905), George M. (1857-1935), Joseph A. (1863-1941), Elmer (1865-1833) and Charles (1868-1943).

I can tell you that the gentleman with long hair and luxuriant beard in the back row is Archibald, but that's the only one I recognize. If you can help, leave a message on this blog post or on one of the Facebook links to it and I'll update.

I assume you already checked ancestry.com. I didn't seem to have this family portrait on my family tree, but I did have snips from it (for Matthew and for Sarah). I just sent a message to the person who posted those snips back in 2008 (SherryWeeks65) to see if she can identify the others in the portrait. I'll let you know if I hear anything.

If you put the names in age order, you may be able to assume most of the identities by the look of the ages in the pic and whether male or female, especially since you know one of them. For instance the little boy in front would be the youngest. Look for things like full head of hair vs. balding etc. Have fun. Charolette
