Saturday turned out to be an eventful day --- an awards program and luncheon with Daughters of the American Revolution in the morning, then our late afternoon "A Night at the Museum" event for youngsters at the Lucas County Historical Society museum.
Here's a photo from the morning event today and I'll be back with more about the afternoon and evening event tomorrow.
Four of us in the photo were grateful recipients of awards from the Nancy McKay Harsh Chapter of the D.A.R., represented in the front row by Jan Morgan (left) of Greenfield, regent, and Pam Marvin of Chariton, who organized the program and luncheon. And, no, Earl Comstock (left) and I (to his left) were not engaged in a contest to see who could look grumpier for the camera --- although Earl won, hands down. We were meeting in the club room of Carl L. Caviness American Legion Post No. 102 in Chariton.
Earl received the Iowa Society Veterans Volunteer Award, in large part because of his exemplary work as principal organizer and coordinator of the Lucas County Veterans Memorial Park, located just across the street northwest of the Legion hall.
I received the Chapter Historical Preservation Recognition Award, in part for this blog, work with the historical society, Chariton Historic Preservation Commission, etc.
To my left is Tim Curnette, who teaches American history at Chariton High School. He received the Chapter Outstanding History Teacher Award for 2020.
To Tim's left is Trae Hall, who received the Chariton High School Good Citizen Award, based upon his record as a student leader and skills as an essayist.
Both Tim and Trae will be in the running now for state and national awards in their respective categories.
After the program, we had lunch --- and that was pretty awesome, too.
Laura Liegois, Chariton city manager, welcomed the chapter and also, as "mystery guest," reprised her role as suffragist Virginia Branner, first performed two weeks ago during the annual Chariton Cemetery Heritage Tour. After the group's business meeting, chapter members planned to pay their respects at Virginia's grave.
