Tubas, tricycles, the "Triking Tubador" and peanuts

There will be two more opportunities in early July to hear Chariton's excellent Community Band before its volunteer musicians fold their instruments, conclude the early summer season and get on with vacations and such.

In both instances, on July 4 and July 11, the band will perform "Chariton Chronicles," the instrumental piece commissioned last year by the Lucas County Historical Society and the Chariton High School Band (the historical society provided funds to hire composer Vince Gassi, band director Daniel Scheetz did the organizing and the band provided the musical talent).

The Thursday, July 4, concert will be at 11 a.m. at the Larry Clark Memorial Bandstand on the courthouse lawn; the Thursday, July 11, concert will begin at 7 p.m. on the patio at the Lucas County Historical Society Museum. All are welcome to attend either or both --- and the bonus on July 11 will be free peanuts, fresh roasted in the 1889 Royal peanut and coffee roaster, donated to the historical society by the late Bob Piper in 1985.

There's been a "Peanut Day" in one form or another at the museum ever since, and this year will be no exception (thanks, as always, to Hy-Vee, which provides the raw peanuts for roasting, and the volunteers who do the actual roasting).

We'll be delighted this year to welcome a special guest, Jon Hodkin, Great Britain's "Triking Tubador," who will take a break from his Tuba Triking Trailer Travels to perform in concert with the band on July 11.

Hodkin, a native of north England who now lives in Scotland's Highlands, has triked thousands of miles across England, Scotland and Northern Ireland since 2000 with his beloved tuba in tow in a custom trailer performing free benefit concerts.

His first U.S. tour, primarily in Iowa due in large part to a principal sponsor, Chariton's Connecticut Yankee Pedaller cycle emporium, will begin July 8 and conclude Aug. 28. Dave Hendricks, owner, will meet Hodkin in Chicago on the 8th. A recumbent tricycle has been lined up for his use, a trailer for the tuba (already in transit) is being custom finished in the Connecticut Yankee shop.

Although is schedule hasn't been finalized, he certainly will participate in segments of RAGBRAI, due to pass through Chariton on Wednesday, July 24, en route from Indianola to Centerville.

Henricks was introduced to Jon by representatives of the agency that initially agreed to be lead sponsor of for his Iowa trek. Then, when budget cuts caused that agency to withdraw its financial support, Connecticut Yankee Pedaller stepped into the lead role.

Dave will pick Hodkin up at the airport in Chicago on July 8, introduce him to his new tricycle and trailer and the rest, as they say, will be history! Don't miss the opportunity to become part of it.
