The thermometer reads minus-4 at the crack of dawn here near the south coast of Iowa on Monday, the 4th of March, 2019. Tomorrow is Shrove Tuesday and I'm trying to remember the last time Lucas County was frozen under drifts of white as we gathered for the annual pancake supper at St. Andrew's Church.
So I'm looking back to March of 2012, one of the earliest springs that I remember, and thinking warm thoughts.
That was the year daffodils were in full bloom at the house on March 15.
On March 18, the magnolias in the Chariton Memorial Arboretum and elsewhere in town burst into full bloom.
And by March 28, Red Haw State Park's signature redbuds, as well as other flowering shrubs and trees, were blooming, too.
About all that can be said about 2019 is, "not this year."
