The peanut gallery at Dazzle Fest ....

Some of Santa's elves were in lighted windows during last evening's Dazzle Fest on the Chariton square and others were roaming the streets --- in costume.

The Lucas County Historical Society elves --- all five of them --- were on the north side, distributing peanuts.

So thanks to Karoline and Kylie Dittmer (above) and Trae Hall and Jennifer Snook-Hall (below). Kathleen Dittmer was there, too, just out of range.

As reported earlier, the peanuts (donated by Hy-Vee) were roasted by a crew of four --- Loren Burkhalter, Jim Secor, Rex Johnson and Bob Ulrich --- in the 1889 Royal peanut and coffee roaster that came to the historical society during 1985 from the late Bob Piper, longtime owner and operator of Piper's Grocery.

Karoline and Kathleen attached our cards to the peanut sacks Friday afternoon, then hauled the wagons and the peanuts uptown yesterday evening.

My only job was to pull the garden wagon two blocks south once all the sacks it had contained had been given away, load it up and prepare to take it back to the museum barn today.

It looked like everyone was having a good time on the square --- Friday's light rain had ceased and good crowd turned out for the Christmas stroll and lighted parade.

And just down the street from our peanut wagons, Piper's --- once the home of our roaster and the source of fresh-roasted peanuts for those in town to do their trading --- was packed.
