Thanks to all who attended Saturday morning's fall open house at the Lucas County Historical Society Museum. It was chilly and it was cloudy, but rain held off until afternoon and youngsters came by the dozens.
The scavenger hunt organized by board member Ann Moon was a big hit with the kids (and their parents) --- we had neatly packaged Iowa quarters for all who completed the course. Karoline was kept busy keeping up with the demand for popcorn. And we served a hot dog lunch to somewhere between 90 and 100.
I'm guessing a majority of those who came had never been to the museum campus before --- and that's part of the strategy behind this event, pointed at a younger crowd.
It's a mistake to start thanking by name because somewhere in the neighborhood of a dozen volunteers were involved and someone will be forgotten, but special credit goes to blacksmith Jerry Book (top). The forge lives in the blacksmith shop, but Jerry hauls a tremendous among of equipment and personal artifacts down to the shop, then back up, in order to participate every year.
The museum is now officially "closed" for the season. Part of the staff will be out of commission until Nov. 1, when regular off-season office hours will resume. In the meantime, someone should be in the office most mornings. Tours can be arranged by calling.
