Julie Alexander Dawson was a fellow communicant of St. Andrew's Church, Chariton, a joy to spend time with, a tireless worker for good causes, a loyal friend. She loved horses. She was a magnificent cook. So far as we know, she was shot to death by her husband, Craig, Sunday night. He then killed himself.
Here's how Des Moines television station KCCI reported her death:
LUCAS, Iowa — An investigation is underway in Lucas County after authorities found two people dead in a home.
The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation said Monday that its dispatch center received a 911 call about a shooting at a home in Lucas.
When authorities arrived, they discovered the bodies of 66-year-old Craig Dawson and 64-year-old Julie Dawson. Authorities confirmed to KCCI that the deaths appear to be a murder-suicide case.
The bodies have been transported to the state medical examiner's office for autopsies.
Authorities said the deaths appear to be an isolated incident. The Iowa DCI and Lucas County Sheriff's Office are investigating.
The Des Moines Police Department confirmed that Craig Dawson previously worked at the department as a police officer.
The department issued a statement, saying, “(Craig Dawson) retired in 2007 after an exemplary 33-year career. We are surprised and saddened by this event, and our thoughts and prayers are with the entire Dawson family.”
