Perhaps the most memorable quote from a U.S. religious leader came this week from the Rev. Robert Jeffress (above), senior pastor of First Baptist Church, Dallas, a Southern Baptist outfit with some 14,000 members and a buddy of the current president.
Referencing the president's alleged affair with porn star Stormy Daniels (left), the Rev. Mr. Jeffress told Fox News on Thursday: "Evangelicals still believe in the commandment 'Thou shalt not have sex with a porn star.' However, whether this president violated that commandment or not is totally irrelevant to our support of him.
“Evangelicals knew they weren’t voting for an altar boy when they voted for Donald Trump,” the Rev. Mr. Jeffress said. “We supported him because of his policies and his strong leadership.”
Actually, I don't remember that commandment --- was it one of the ten or perhaps just referenced in a footnote? But --- the Rev. Mr. Jeffress is a widely respected evangelical Christian leader --- so I'll take his word that it's there; and certainly did appreciate his clarification of the evangelical Christian take on this whole business.
And it was interesting to learn that the Evangelical Christian view of their president parallels that of those German religious leaders who celebrated the rise of Adolph Hitler back in the 1930s. It's all about policies and strong leadership, you know. So what if a little genocide is involved.
But this did get me to thinking --- is there anything that the president might do that would turn the affection Evangelical Christians have for him into scorn?
And then I had the answer --- what if Stormy Daniels had been Stanley Daniels, a male porn star with hair on his chest?
That I'm guessing would have done it. Evangelical Christians do love their bad boys.
But gay folks and gay sex? Too much. Too much. The incumbent would be impeached in two shakes of a lamb's tail and President Pence would arise from the ashes.
