The big news Thursday was that the sun was clearly visible as it rose on the far horizon --- and remained visible all day. After many days of gloom.
At 8 a.m., Legionnaires approached the big flag pole at Veterans Memorial Park, raised a 48-star U.S. flag to the sound of a drum roll provided by Steve Scott, then lowered it to half staff in honor of John Glenn, whose remains were buried later in the day at Arlington National Cemetery.
A contingent from Carl L. Caviness American Legion Post No. 102 then walked to the veterans' flag pole and raised a commemorative flag that marked the anniversary of U.S. entry into World War I on April 6, 1917, a century ago.
As the flags waved in the sunshine, we walked across the street to the post home for coffee and cookies. I, who had not had breakfast, ate five.
No matter which way you look at it, it was a good way to begin the day.
