Adventus ...

By the time I got to church yesterday afternoon --- to pick out a seasonal hymn or two --- work-a-day green of the long season after Pentecost had been stored away and purple paraments installed. The wreath was in place --- three purple candles, one pink (Gaudete!) and the biggest of all, the Christ candle, which we'll light on Christmas Eve.

'Tis the season. Not Christmas (that doesn't begin until December 25th). But Advent, the start of a new church and liturgical year. And a four-week season of expectant waiting and meditation.

If Christmas gets on your nerves, that means you're starting this whole business to early. Try Advent instead. Here's an Advent hymn performed by the choir of St. John's College, Cambridge, to get you in the mood.
