Showy Tick Trefoil

Photographed 27 July 2014, Cinder Path prairie remnant between Derby and Humeston.

Desmodium canadense. A member of the bean (Fabaceae) family native to Lucas County's moist to mesic prairies; also appears in pastures, thickets and along streams. Plants are 2-4 feet tall, sometimes sprawling; three leaflets form bean-like leaves on short stalks. Long clusters of purple flowers occur at the ends of branches.

Blooms mid-summer for about three weeks, then forms flat segmented seed pods that look a little like a flattened chain of beads. Pods are covered by fine hooked hairs that allow segments to cling to animals as well as to the clothing, shoelaces and hair of humans, resulting in the designation "sticktights."
