Gender Dysphoria, Iowa & broken hearts ....

Iowa Senate File 538, which bans transgender minors from accessing age-appropriate, best practice care, went into effect on Monday, causing kids, their families and care providers considerable grief --- as was intended by the state's GOP-controlled legislature.

I'm slightly frustrated this morning because I wanted to point toward a well-researched overview published yesterday in The Des Moines Register, but that has disappeared (for me) behind a pay wall. Subscribers and infrequent Register browsers still will be able to access it and if interested, you should do that.

Yes, I know I could re-subscribe, but untangling the twists and turns of my previous subscription was so darned frustrating that I'm hesitant to get involved with wonderful world of Gannett again.

Here's a link to a piece in The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier, but unlike the Register, the reporter there focused on providers and failed to talk to families and thereby misses a comprehensive story.

One Iowa, the state's largest LGBTQ+ advocacy group, has provided an updated resource page aimed at transgender families that provides a good overview of the ins and outs of the new law, too. You can access it here.

"Aw shucks," GOP lawmakers say --- these kids can wait until they're 18 to transition. But that's a lot like telling a kid born with a broken heart that repairs will have to wait until he or she turns 18 --- providing they survive. And some won't.
