American heroes ....

Commentator Bill Kristol is among those I've followed consistently in the aftermath of the Jan. 6 insurrection.

Here's his assessment of his long-time colleague U.S. Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyoming, given after the televised hearings Thursday of The House Select Committee to Investigate the Jan. 6 Attack on the U.S. Capitol: "Liz Cheney's presentation will, in my judgment, go down in the history books: Congress at its best, truth-telling at its best, American democracy at its best."

And Cheney's assessment of the GOP response to the insurrection, as expressed Thursday evening:

"Tonight, I say this to our Republican colleagues who are defending the indefensible: there will come a day when Donald Trump is gone — but your dishonor will remain."

Obviously, Cheney has political aspirations. This certainly will not be the last time we hear from her. But if and when she runs for president, I'd never consider voting for her --- she is, after all, still an arch-conservative.

But an honest one --- and that's very rare these days. So I'd happily endorse her as an American hero.
