"Empty thoughts, meaningless prayer, bloody hands"

Iowa lawmakers on Tuesday sent to Gov. Kim Reynolds a bill to establish new January seasons for deer hunters who wish to use semi-automatic rifles.

Earlier in the session, the GOP-controlled Legislature gave its second blessing to an amendment enshrining the right to keep and bear arms in the Iowa Constitution. We'll now vote on that amendment during November.

Last year, the GOP-controlled Legislature eliminated the need for handgun permits.

Concern about Iowa schools during this Legislative season resulted in measures forbidding mention of critical race theory and barring transgender women from athletic competition. Gov. Reynolds delayed adjournment of the 2022 session for several weeks while she campaigned (unsuccessfully) to divert public school funds to private Christian schools with a voucher program.

Meanwhile, down in Texas on Tuesday, an 18-year-old clad in body armor and carrying an assault rifle broke into a public elementary school in Uvalde and killed at least 19 children and two adults.

The Atlantic's David Frum fairly well summarizes the situation across the United States, including Iowa, in this piece entitled "America's Hands are Full of Blood."

After a few weeks of rhetoric rather than action, those who look upon the Uvalde shootings as bad publicity rather than as a national tragedy will be able to rest easy again as the details fade in our collective memory.

And we'll settle back and wait for it to happen again.
