Cemetery Heritage Tour postponed until 2021

I suppose it's not unexpected that the Chariton Historic Preservation Commission on Monday decided to postpone the 2020 version of its Chariton Cemetery Heritage Tour until September of 2021. But we didn't enjoy making that decision.

These annual programs at the cemetery that shine light on the lives of some of those buried there have gone on for many years, organized by the commission with the cooperation of volunteer actors and the backing of sponsoring businesses and professionals and a loyal audience.

We can pull the event together in about six weeks, so as a commission we've postponed a decision on this year's event until now, hoping the corona virus situation would improve or at least stabilize. But that's not happened and in light of that it seems irresponsible to schedule a public event as summer winds down.

So now we'll look forward to next year. The commission at the moment consists of Alyse Hunter, Melody Wilson, Dave Edwards and Frank Myers. Commissioner Jerry Taylor retired earlier this year, so his replacement should be appointed soon.

Here's a photo of the actors in the 2019 tour, (from left) Trae Hall, Laura Liegois, Jayden Allen-Winston, Jamie Wilson, Linda Braida and Jaynane Hardie, to remind us all of what we'll be missing. Hope to see you all in September 2021.
