I expect that it's going to be another interesting week in Iowa as the number of new COVID-19 cases remains at record levels. A total of 990 new cases was reported during the 24 hours prior to 11 a.m. Sunday. Iowa's per capita rate of increase in case numbers is the highest in the United States, according to New York Times calculations.
Iowa's own record keeping system has proved to be notoriously unreliable, so The Times reports generally are recognized as the most authoritative available.
And we're on our own in dealing with this in the absence of statewide leadership. If this all seems remarkably primitive, it is.
It's become increasingly evident, however, that wearing a mask is very important, so do that when out and about, mingling with folks you don't live with. Avoid gatherings when possible. Social distance when you can. Wash hands and/or sanitize frequently. Stay home if you're feeling unwell.
Be very careful about believing what you see on social media; rely on medical professionals and not necessarily your "friends" for advice.
Say "thanks" when appropriate to those who are taking precautions, including those who, for example, may not be convinced of the efficacy of face-coverings but wear them anyway out of respect for their neighbors.
And stay well. We're learning a lot about each other during this long summer of our discontent. Make what others learn about you something positive. (Charts via The New York Times)
