Tombstone Iconography: Daughters of Rebekah

The symbolism here is found on a flag holder placed next to a tombstone rather than on the stone itself. Its presence signifies membership in the Daughters of Rebekah (Rebekahs, International Association of Rebekah Assemblies).

Founded in 1851 as an auxiliary organzation for the wives and daughters of members of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows (I.O.O.F.), no longer a membership requirement, both the Rebekahs and the Odd Fellows once were large, active and influential organizations in Chariton.

The flag holder incorporates several Rebekah symbols --- a dove, for peace; a lily, for purity; the moon and seven stars, representing the orderly nature of creation; and (obscured by the dove's wings) a beehive, representing cooperative endeavor.

Once upon a time, distinctive organizational flags would have been placed in these holders for Memorial Day. But that day is long past, the lodges no longer exist here and these lovely little holders no longer have a purpose.
