A Night at the Museum ....

It was a challenge late Saturday afternoon to keep up with the 100 or more kiddos who turned out for "A Night at the Museum," the Lucas County Historical Society's final event of the official season (we close, sort of, on Oct. 31 although the office remains open and those who wish to tour can arrange to do so).

Inspired by the 2006 movie of the same name, this was a new event and we were happy with the outcome. So thanks to our own Events Committee who worked in cooperation with Pam Morgan, program coordinator for the Chariton Free Public Library, and Laura Liegois, Chariton city manager, to pull it off.

That's the costume parade above, which moved too fast for me --- but I did manage to catch part of it, including grand marshal Derek Philips, Van Allen school principal.

The youngsters seemed to especially enjoy our two craft stations --- one operated by board member Ann Moon in the Lewis Building.

And the other by Pam Morgan, in the Blacksmith Shop.

Five of our exhibits came to life, thanks to Karoline Dittmer in the Pioneer Cabin ...

... Savannah Williams in Puckerbrush School ...

... Trae Hall in the Vredenburg Gallery ...

Laura Liegois in the Stephens House ...

... and Fred Steinbach in Otterbein Church.

Sharon Wilhite was on hand to take (free of charge) souvenir photographs for all who wished to strike a pose.

And Cowboy Billy (Will Ghormley) was on hand to share some harmonica music and a story.

After the parade, there were free hot dogs and cookies, courtesy of Hy-Vee, in the Pioneer Barn, then a showing of the 2006 film for all who wished to remain in the Lewis Building.

A lot of very hard work went into organizing and pulling off this event so we're grateful to everyone who helped us move toward the end of the museum season on such a high note.
