Pretend it's 1889 and take a walk around the square

I wrote yesterday about Dr. Albert Lee Yocom Sr.'s move from Newbern to Chariton during the spring of 1889. Remarkably, thanks to S.S. King and the newspaper he edited and managed at the time, we have a good idea of just what sort of community the Yocoms moved into.

This remarkable map was published several times on the front page of The Democrat during 1889. Because it was among other things an advertising venture, it is not complete. King added the caveat, "Note: Business directory cannot be made complete because some business men do not believe in advertising. Information as to who occupies any of the vacant places in the diagram will be furnished free on application to this office."

But still, it's a valuable resource. To use it yourself, you'll need to right click on the map and open it in a new window. You also can save the enlarged image to your own computer if you care to do so.

Then, as now, the Courthouse Park occupied the center of the square. But the courthouse itself was an 1858 model. And only Main Street, north and south, had the same name. What now is Grand Street was First Street; Braden Avenue was First Avenue; and Court Avenue, Main Avenue. The four alleys on the four sides of the square divided those streets and avenues into the "east," "west," "north" and "south."

This was a very confusing naming scheme that had replaced the original scheme under which all the streets (north-south) and avenues (east-west) were named after presidents and/or politicians. Some years after this map was drawn, the current street and avenue names were applied.

Appended to the bottom of the map is a directory of occupants of upstairs rooms in the business districts and some buildings, including churches, located off the square. That list, I've transcribed as follows. Have fun!
