Tenting tonight on the old camp ground

This is the time of year when those of us who possess neither Airstream nor tent creep into the Red Haw camp ground --- and take over.

It's one of the prettiest parts of the park, on a wooded hilltop overlooking the lake, good for bird watching, picnicking or just sitting and looking. When it's 80-some slots aren't otherwise occupied.

I've always thought that if I did camp, this would be the time of year I'd like to be out here. Although the showers building is closed, water, power and other amenities remain available.

When I drove through late yesterday (watch out for the speed bumps), one trailer with Arizona plates was there and occupied. Another was parked, but apparently not.

There's still plenty of fall color out there still, although the season now is in its final oak-fueled phase.

And an amazing number of birds in the campground trees.
